HORSE LORDS

Originally from Baltimore, experimental band Horse Lords decamped to Berlin over the pandemic and in the absence of live shows they set about working on their exceptional third album Comradely Objects; a frantic yet deeply danceable mix of microtonal flourishes and meticulously constructed rhythms. Working with modified guitar and bass, saxophone, drums and electronics the band create rigid polyrhythms that are in equal parts maddening and hypnotic, when combined they somehow reference Afro-beat, krautrock, math rock, post punk all whilst sounding completely unique and new. The lengthy tracks are undeniably complex but also very accessible, this is particularly prevalent during their entrancing live performances that seamlessly shift between telepathic grooves and bursts of noise, the kind of set that is equally enjoyable seated at Cafe Oto but also would blow up at 3am at a festival. -Toby Evans-Jesra
